The Othala rune is the rune most associated with Odin, the All-Father. Not only does it appear at the start of his name, the rune represents ancestry and inheritance. Odin is the ancestor of most of the Aesir gods and the creator of mankind.
Odin hung himself from Yggdrasil for nine days and nights pierced by his own spear to learn the secrets of the runes. He shared the runes with mankind, showing them how to use them as both an alphabet and a magical toolkit.
In modern rune magic and divination practices, the Othala rune often points towards the ancestors, inheritance, and the shared subconscious knowledge of the collective. The rune can also be a reminder that we are responsible for our own destiny and to take action.
